Of the lighter-than-air craft used by the Allies there were basically two classes: tethered passive gas bags — barrage balloons — used to make low altitudes untenable for attacking aircraft, and powered blimps used for anti-submarine patrol and for air-sea rescue.

All three of the European powers made use of barrage balloons, the Axis powers adopting them after seeing their effectiveness when used by the British in the Blitz. The manufacturers of barrage balloons in the US included Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire, while BF Goodrich also supplied balloon material

Blimps were used exclusively by the US Navy. They were made by Goodyear Aircraft Corporation.
